The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
